graphicanatomy Gasp
A look at the most infamous of words in the English language and how it is used in our society. The queen mother of cursing; it is considered vulgar, taboo, obscene, controversial and yet a huge part of our culture. The word is at the very center of our 1st amendment free speech rights. It's used everywhere from Hollywood, to the school yard, to the Senate floor of Washington DC.
Furthermore it is used in every way possible. It can be a verb, adverb, noun, adverb, adjective interjection, noun, infix, and as a command; it can be substituted for any word in a sentence. Truly, this is the most magical of words with the power to affect people like no other.

I am Neda
A politcal commentary based on the backlash of the Iran election protests in June of 2009. The woman's name was Neda Agha-Soltan. Even though it was half a world away, witnessing her death via internet hit home in a shocking and somber way. One moment you're here; the next, nothing. In the struggle for human rights, this was NOT a soldier or politician or leader; just an everyday civilian. Since the shooting the Iranian government has desicrated her grave and removed her tombstone. It is important not to forget.
17.5 x 27.5" or 45x 70cm Acrylic and mixed media.

graphicanatomy graphicanatomy graphicanatomy This is My Body, This is My Blood
It started with a salvaged frame found in the trash. I removed the broken glass and crumbling statuary it once housed and cleaned it up, so it could be saved. It seemed the thing to do since "saving" is the basis of Christian beliefs.
The bottom panel door contains a DaVinci reproduction, so whatever artwork I created was going to center around and reflect that piece, The Last Supper. I began thinking of the quote associated with the event. "This is my body, this is my blood." And that became my springboard. The recent phenomenon, DaVinci Code, that suggested that the "Blood of Christ" and the "Cup of Christ" had more female involvement; I wanted a strong feminine image in contrast to the Last Supper. The painted blood in the hidden bottom panel alludes to the blood sacrifice of Christ, and the blood that is spent every month naturally women. Historically, we can look at how the Christian church has treated women and female reproduction and debate the imbalances. So I contrasted a rarely seen feminine image with a very popular image of Christian patriarchy. The result was two extremes coming together to achieve an unusual balance.
But it more than just religion, it was a challenge to render this part of the body. In art class we learned to draw hands and faces, but never this body part. It has been demonized and taboo-ed and hidden away in a haze of mystery. And yet, it is as individual and unique to each woman as much as her face or fingerprint. (I believe the same is true for the male counterpart.)
So as unnerving as it may seem... This is a portrait of someone in particular, who was chosen for her subliminal cross shape. So with out shame or regret both can claim, "This is my body, this is my blood."
This piece required me to do push beyond the limits of comfort and take a few risks.
