One Stroke Painting
InsomniaWhile you slept, I've been busy. These newest works mark a change in using raw wood as a background. Not only does this create a natural texture, but continues strip away any unnecessary embellishment.
Power Seriesis a series of paintings inspired by current events and the multitude of issues that have reached a boiling point world wide. Perhaps, this is a good time to re- examine many traditional beliefs; everything from freedom and equality, to what constitutes a "human right", all the way down to standards of beauty and even gender roles. What ideas do we hold onto? What ideas do we change or modify for the better? Should these principles and beliefs be more inclusive or exclusive?
The style of these acrylic paintings are influenced by comic books, graphic design and pop art applied to classical figurative anatomy. The situations are presented in the body language of the human figure. Individual likeness and specific details are minimized to make it more open ended to the viewer. Many works provoke the viewer into making assumptions. As the viewer fills in the blanks they can then examine their own responses.
Talisman SeriesPaintings dealing with average people wearing wrestling masks doing very non- wrestling things. The Talisman mask is an object meant to give the bearer supernatural power or protection. Luche Libre masks are featured because of their aesthetic value and design potential. Stylistically, detail is eliminated for bold colors making it almost cartoon like; which refers back to the idea of having super powers.
Electric SeriesThe human figure, beautiful in its infinite variety, is the perfect launch pad to explore ideas of gender, sexuality and beauty. The rights won by Queer culture have benefited everyone's right to self -expression. The once rigid and polarized categories of masculine and feminine have relaxed and expanded with the advancement of Queer culture. Now ALL benefit by being able to explore and express their true self, rather than conforming to this or that box. Influenced by comic books, graphic design and pop art applied to classical figurative anatomy, I seek to celebrate the beauty in what was once considered taboo or undesirable.
Voyeur SeriesThe interest or practice of observing people engaged in intimate behaviors or other actions usually considered to be private.
The Seven Deadly Sins SeriesThe challenge was to portray the classic sins using body language.
I narrowed the focus to the one body part often associated with "sin".
